Scots fashion guru slams plus-sized mannequin plan

Founder of the Scottish Fashion Awards, Tess Hartmann, has rubbished claims the psychological state of consumers now lies in the hands of retailers.

Britain’s equality minister, Jo Swinson, has been asking stores to use plus-size and petite clothes models to promote a positive body image for women.

In November, retail giant Debenhams became the first department store to use size 16 display models. Other stores have said they may follow to more reflect changing body shapes.

The average UK women’s dress size has grown from a 12 to a 16 in little more than a decade, but many stores still use size ten models to show off their clothes.
But now fashion guru Ms Hartmann says people need to take more responsibility for their lifestyle and diet choices.Dr Hartmann said: “Enough of this ridiculous blame culture. Being bigger, voluptuous, large, whatever word you like to use, is a lifestyle choice.
“Our bad diets, lack of exercise and blame culture are to blame.

“So instead of wasting taxpayers’ money on sensationalist campaigns that are completely futile, why not direct our efforts towards poverty-stricken areas of Scotland, where bad diets are the norm?”

Kate Middleton’s Christmas Outfit

Despite the frigid temperatures Kate Middleton was all smiles as she stepped out on Dec. 25 and showed off two chic outerwear looks as she stepped out on the Queen’s private estate. First we saw the Duchess in a cream coat and she stylishly layered a printed, plaid scarf over the ensemble while greeting the Queen. Not only was the outfit appropriate for the cold day, but it looked fantastic on Kate — she’s always so perfectly put together!

Kate Middleton’s Christmas Outfit:

While we were a fan of her cream overcoat it wasn’t long before she shed the get-up and revealed a green and navy tartan coat dress as she made her way into St. Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham, Norfolk, England while walking hand in hand with her hubby. The ensemble, by Alexander McQueen, extended to the new mother’s knee. We couldn’t think of a better Christmas look — and it wasn’t the first time she showed it off!

Kate first wore the ensemble in November 2012 when she visited her old primary school, St. Andrew’s in Pangbourne, where she played hocked with pupils while dressed in the pretty plaid look. While no one knew it at the time, the Duchess was actually in the early stages of her pregnancy — and just days later she was rushed to the hospital with morning sickness!

On this occasion she paired it with a matching green Gina Foster hat, (which was topped with a bow),and rocked black, knee-high suede boots and a pair of black gloves. The hat and boots definitely gave the festive get-up a more formal vibe, and we love the way she recycled the coat dress!

Julia Roberts Talks Family Drama & Her A-List BFFs

Julia Roberts may have reigned supreme in starring roles in the '90s and early aughts, but these days, she's happy with a more scaled-back career. She's sticking with supporting roles and being choosier than ever when it comes to signing on. That means, of course, that when shedoes pick a flick, she's more serious than ever — and, you know it's gonna be good.

Such is the case with next month'sAugust: Osage County. Roberts teamed up with Meryl Streep, Ewan McGregor, and Dermot Mulroney for the screen adaptation of the Tony-winning play. She gets to go head-to-head with Streep, who plays her pill-popping mother. The movie itself may be filled with drama, but on set it was all love — or so she says.

What was it like coming together with such a sprawling A-list cast?

"We spent a lot of time together and getting to know each other. We didn’t know each other at all when it started, and by the time that we began filming, I felt very familiar and entangled with these girls in way that seemed correct for sisters, and had made just enough happy experiences with them and had a couple of appropriate sisterly like, 'really, that’s what you’re wearing?' kind of moments where I felt like it was all going to fall into place."

How did you prepare for your part?

"I guess some people write diaries or backstories — I liken it to channeling. Just kidding — but kind of not kidding. But, no, I feel like when I first read this script my heart just swelled and I completely understood everything about the character. What one is not proud of is all relative. What she is not proud of could be nothing to someone else. People’s pain is so individual.

But, I feel like as an actor, to be in touch with all those emotions of shame, anger, your lust, your joy, those are sort of like your watercolors. I have to validate [playwright] Tracy [Letts] and [director] John [Wells] while we’re here. First of all, John gave us this beautiful environment to put out what we needed to create these roles. He was very consistent as a temperament, like really lovely and easy to work with and perform with. He gave us a rehearsal period, which is really a luxury on film these days.

And, Tracy Letts, his writing, I was so floored. You’ve seen the state of cinema today. This was something that comes once in a while. His characters are so strong. They just leap off the page. I understood Karen and her delusion and denial and all those things."
Is she a realist?

"I’m always struggling between being a realist or an idealist. Somebody said you can be both, but it depends."

She spends maybe a little too much time flirting with a man who may be her future brother-in-law.

"I would like to speak about Dermot. Dermot and I have been friends since My Best Friend’s Wedding. We became great pals then, and when he called me that he had gotten a part in this, we squealed like little girls, both of us, and were so excited for each other and to be back together.

And, with everybody, but in particularly Dermot, even when he had a day off, would come run lines with me before I went to work at six o’clock in the morning, which he traded for a cup of coffee. And, just the whole time feeling so supported by my old friend. He would come to work and watch scenes that I was in and just kind of support me in that way. It was beautiful to have each other in that way, especially when we were all away from our families and forging new relationships. It was just nice to have my rock steady there. It was great."

Was it hard to put aside all the vitriol between you and Ms. Streep when the cameras stopped rolling?

"We hugged a lot. I always had to look her right in the eye before we parted ways. We’re all good? Just kidding, right?"

Where will your character wind up after the credits roll?

"I don’t want to say where I’m going because I think that more than any person in the piece, Barbara, in the end, everyone that I’ve responded to says, 'Oh, I know exactly what she’s thinking, exactly where she’s going and what she’s going to do.' And, I haven’t heard the same answer twice. I don’t want to spoil it for anybody.

Karen, to me, represents so many people in life and women and people I met. She could go one of two ways. They’re going to fight on the trip, no doubt. He might hit on the waitress, and then he might buy her a present, and then they might fall back into it. I don’t know; she might yo-yo up, and then she might have an epiphany. She’s not going to have an epiphany. Maybe she could. She should."

DIY Beauty: 3 Easy & Fast Lemon Beauty Treatments

As the temperature drops and as the first snowflakes of this year begin to fall, I can’t help but long for summertime. I miss the warm summer sun, cooling off in my friend’s pool, and most of all, drinking a glass of ice cold lemonade when it’s 90 degrees outside.

However, since I’d rather drink a cup of hot coffee during the winter, I decided to whip up some DIY beauty recipes that incorporate lemons. Needless to say, they all smell ridiculously good, and remind me of my much-missed summertime!

Lemon Honey Facial Mask

Mix together the juice of 1/2 a lemon, 2 tbsp honey, and 1 tbsp Greek yogurt. Apply the mask to your face and leave it on for 10-15 minutes. Rinse it off with warm water, pat your face dry, then moisturize.

Lemon Sugar Scrub

Mix together the juice of 1/2 a lemon, 1 cup granulated sugar, and 1 tbsp of sweet almond oil. This scrub is fantastic for your hands and feet!

To use, apply the scrub to your skin and gently exfoliate with small circular motions. You can store this scrub in a refrigerated airtight container for up to a month.

Cucumber Lemon Toner

Combine 1 tbsp of lemon juice, 3 cups of cold water, about 1/2 a cup of cucumber slices, and about 1/2 a cup of lemon slices in a jar with a lid.

After using your favorite cleanser, simply use a cotton ball to apply the some of the toner to your face. Keep the toner in the refrigerator for up to a week. This beauty treatment works especially well on oily skin.

The tux inspires elegant luxe in women's fashion

We've all seen it — guests on the holiday party circuit, stuffed into spangled frocks that won't stay in place, an undergirding of Spanx holding in the wobbly bits. Then a glamorous guest sweeps in, the epitome of stripped-down sophistication in her sharply tailored tuxedo suit. The look is so effortlessly elegant that it seems to put over-the-top party dressers to shame.

"I feel like the tuxedo epitomizes glamour and androgynous cool," says local celebrity-stylist-turned-designer Rachel Zoe, whose namesake collection is known for incorporating tuxedo elements. "It exudes a strong and powerful message and is a less overt way of being sexy."

Moving way beyond the suit, tuxedo dressing options have multiplied in recent seasons, with an influx of creative new styles. Ranging from jumpsuits, cape-style jackets and shorts to drawstring trousers, dresses and trompe l'oeil tops, these party dress alternatives work year-round as wardrobe staples.

"The tuxedo has always been something that I have looked at and [I've] wanted to change the way people think about it," says New York designer Phillip Lim, whose holiday collection includes tuxedo-inspired coats, jackets, T-shirts, dresses and trousers. "I love the idea of it being worn in an off-kilter way, in a luxe pajama style or in a really feminine dress version. I think the resurgence is coming from this idea that people are getting more creative with black tie dressing, and it means that everyone can have a lot more fun with the options."
Rozae Nichols, creative director of 3-year-old local fashion label Clover Canyon, designed a playful take on the penguin suit for her holiday collection, juxtaposing a hand-painted penguin pattern with a tromp l'oeil print of a tuxedo vest, complete with a pocket square and cummerbund, on her Black Tie Event sweatshirts, tops and dresses.

"I go to the L.A. Philharmonic once a month, and I was just so enamored by watching the orchestra," says Nichols. "I'm always enchanted by their black tuxedos in the winter and their white tuxedos in the springtime. The collection [which also includes prints of musical instruments] was completely inspired by them."

Local boutique Just One Eye has nearly sold out of a limited-edition, capsule collection of women's tuxedos, designed by French brand Pallas in collaboration with Belgian model Hannelore Knuts, known for her androgynous style.

The signature, tomboy style of a growing number of stars, such as Rita Ora, Rihanna, Kristen Stewart, Miley Cyrus, Alexa Chung, Lou Doillon and model-of-the-moment Cara Delevingne, may be a factor in the latest tux redux.

And thanks in part to the fashion influence of J. Crew and its creative director Jenna Lyons, borrowed-from-the-boys dressing has gone mainstream; the company offers sleek women's tuxedo jackets, gingham tuxedo shirts and tuxedo-striped chino trousers, designed to wear from a.m. to p.m.

For styling tips, take a cue from the celebs: It's all about a mix of masculine and feminine, timeless and trendy. In October, Ora donned a red plaid Moschino tuxedo suit with a matching bow tie and stiletto booties, siren red lipstick and intricate drop earrings. Nicole Richie was a lesson in laid-back chic at the ChloƩ fashion show and dinner in Beverly Hills, wearing a monochromatic white tuxedo blazer with a silky blouse, jeans and heels. Last month, Lupita Nyong'o showed up on the red carpet in a Prabal Gurung tuxedo dress from the 2014 resort collection, paired with crisp white Christian Louboutin heels, an understated clutch handbag and vivid purple lipstick.

"[The tuxedo suit] doesn't always have to be worn as a full tuxedo, and you don't have to treat it so preciously," says Zoe. "If you have a longer three-quarter-length jacket, wear it as a dress with tights, heels, a bold lip and a topknot for a holiday party. I just think the modern girl breaks it up — she wears her tux jacket with jeans and a white tee and her tux pants with a leather bomber and sunnies."

"Great jewelry will always make or break the tux look," adds Lim.

And sometimes, less is more. Gwyneth Paltrow was recently photographed in a fitted tuxedo suit, minus a blouse or bra, plus a dazzling diamond necklace, while shooting a campaign for the new Boss Jour Pour Femme fragrance in Los Angeles; Cyrus followed suit, stepping out last month at the American Music Awards in a white Versus Versace tux with nothing underneath. Fashion icon Kate Moss left a little more to the imagination, accessorizing her classic Saint Laurent Le Smoking tux suit with a sexy, sheer striped blouse and strappy sandals.

After all, a Saint Laurent tuxedo piece is always the ultimate in chic, given that designer Yves Saint Laurent introduced the first Le Smoking tuxedo suit for women in 1966. The venerable brand's current designer, Hedi Slimane, carries on the tradition with modern reinterpretations of the label's iconic tuxedo pieces.
"My all-time favorite tuxedo look would have to be the iconic YSL suit, circa 1975 — the Helmut Newton shot with that gorgeous tuxedo shoulder," says Nichols. "It doesn't get much better than that!"

One Direction's Niall Horan Woos His Fave Lady In New York

One Direction's Niall Horan treated the number one lady in his life with a slap-up meal in New York City last night - yep, his and Katy Perry's love-in continues...

The 20-year-old Irish charmer, whose mum recently spilled all about his busy love life, was spotted rocking up to members-only club Soho House followed shortly by the Roar singer herself for a cosy dinner for two.

Making a special effort for his superstar date, Niall had clearly dressed to impress in smart blue jeans, a grey silk bomber jacket, pristine white Nike high-tops and a Lakers b-ball cap (er, we hope that came off once inside inside, Mr Horan...).

Katy, meanwhile, kept it demure in a striped brown coat, knee-high leather boots and a cosy hat and scarf. Extra layers mean extra protection from the ladykiller, right Pezza?

The pair arrived and left the venue separately in a sly attempt to remain unnoticed, but we have no doubt that plenty of giggles were shared once the duo were reunited inside the swanky eatery.

After their famous on-stage kiss at the MTV VMAs in September, Niall went on to announce his love for the Teenage Dream singer on Twitter which led to the lovebirds then announcing their 'showbiz engagement' to the world via a cosy Instagram snap. Aw.

With Ms Perry flying into the UK this weekend to perform at the Capital FM Jingle Bell Ball, could another romantic reunion be on the cards for these two?

Fashion Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen

Welcome to the latest edition of Looks from Books, which aims to prove that you can look smart, while still being book-smart, too. Fashion inspiration can be found between the pages of your favorite stories, on well-designed book covers, and in your favorite characters… if you read closely enough.

This week, we're taking inspiration from a recent film release to explore the realm of fiction created by a truly iconic children's author, whose works are enjoyed by the young, as well as young-at-heart: Hans Christian Andersen. Read on to learn more about this author, as well as a few outfits based on his memorable works.
Hans-Christian-Andersen-Book-Cover
Inside Cover
Hans Christian Andersen was a Danish author made famous for his iconic children's stories, written in the 19th century.
From "The Little Mermaid" to "Thumbelina" to "The Princess and the Pea," Andersen's works are known worldwide for their characteristic whimsy, fantastic elements, and inventive use of such narrative details as personification and lessons of virtue. In fact, his works have been translated into more than 125 languages!

However, he was never exclusively an author for children; he was also known as a prolific author of many genres, including travelogues, plays, poems, and novels. Andersen was very popular with the literary set of Europe and was a close friend of Charles Dickens, who shared with him a profound regard for the plight of the lower classes.

A Fashionable Literacy
Frozen movie poster
Andersen's iconic stories have provided fodder for many media adaptations, from musicals and stage plays to feature films, including Disney's most recent release, Frozen! (Psst-be sure to check out our post onfashion inspired by Frozen.)
Frozen is loosely based off of Andersen's "The Snow Queen"… emphasis on the term "loosely." The film's plot rejects the majority of the original components of the classic children’s story, but solidly retains the heart of the witch-delivered snow storm, as well as the story's distinctly Scandinavian heritage. For instance, the film drew inspiration from the author’s snowy landscape for the ice formations.

How to Add Andersen to Your Wardrobe
By integrating key elements from some of Andersen's most iconic works into your own outfits, you, too, canadd some of the author's characteristic inventiveness and fantasy to your own life!

"The Ugly Ducking"
Hans christian andersen ugly duckling
The works of Hans Christian Andersen carry themes drawn from his own life, and the most obvious of these is the well-known story of "The Ugly Duckling." The unique tale of the odd-duck-out who, born from the wrong nest, grows up to be a swan, is believed to be a personal biographical allegory of the author’s own history, tracing his origin from the "duckyard" of Odense, Denmark, to his own "swan-like" acclaim in Copenhagen.

Pay homage to Andersen's history by integrating animal motifs and updated variations on barnyard basics into a look that's as whimsical and optimistic as the author's own life story. A swan dress, fox earrings, cat flats, and a bird scarf-plus a neutral nail polish in Butter London's "Hen Party"-provide a "wild" touch. Pair those pieces with a denim jacket and a classic leather bag in a warm red hue for a look that’s grounded in comfort, but looks fit for the city.
"The Red Shoes"
Hans christian andersen the red shoes
Hans Christian Andersen discussed a variety of subjects within his work: class status, travel, and even fashion commentary. Well, kind of. This classic tale offers a take on the age-old sins of vanity and pride, and ends with penance and suffering resulting in transcendence into Heaven, as a girl dances to death in a pair of flaming red shoes.

The ill-fated footwear was rumored to be inspired by an observed injustice: it is said that Andersen's father was once tasked with making a pair of red silk dancing shoes for a well-off woman's daughter, only to have the woman accuse him of spoiling the fabric with his shoddy craftsmanship and refuse to pay him for his work.

Emphasize the luxurious with baroque-inspired pieces, contrasted against minimalist basics, for an ensemble that capitalizes on the juxtaposition of vanity and simplicity. A minimalistic envelope clutch, basic black blazer, and white blouse are matched with luxe elements like a faux fur scarf, a tight brocade-print midi, and patent red shoes for a look that is equal parts extravagant and down-to-earth.

"The Snow Queen"
HCA-The-Snow-Queen-Silver-Loafers
Hans Christian Andersen's works have always been popular, especially with today's wide realm of fairy tales and children's stories. From The Little Mermaid to Thumbelina, variations abound, particularly in family-friendly film iterations that appeal to the same audiences-and impart the same lessons-that the originals did so many centuries ago. Inspired by the most recent source of inspiration from his works, the film Frozen, we have "The Snow Queen," which has also inspired many other film, television, stage, and even ballet adaptations throughout the years.

Celebrate the permeation of Hans Christian Andersen's works into world culture, with a specific emphasis on the most recent source work, by adding some high shine "frost" to your outfits with sleek silver and sequins, thus spreading a little bit of "Snow Queen" throughout your wardrobe. From eyeliner to earrings to sparkles and studs, there's plenty of the ice-cold silver shine to go around, just like Andersen's iconic stories.

And who better to sell it than the sexy starlet herself - the supermodel mum showed off her effortless off-duty sex appeal once again as she reclined on a bed and caressed her much-anticipated cover as it lay on her chest. Miaow.

'Now celebrating our first Playboy with Kitty @ home. Love u bad girl', fames snapper Mert wrote alongside the seductive snap.
