Vanessa Friedman to leave The Financial Times for The New York Times
Vanessa Friedman, the fashion editor of The Financial Times, is leaving the publication to fill two very big pairs of boots at the New York Times.
Business of Fashion reports that Friedman will fill the post of both Suzy Menkes, who announced her departure from her 25-year post as the International Herald Tribune's (now the International New York Times) fashion editor earlier this month, and that of Cathy Horyn, the chief fashion critic for The New York Times, who is leaving the newspaper for personal reasons.
American-born Friedman will take the role of fashion director and chief fashion critic for both The New York Times and The International New York Times, starting in April.
"I'm thrilled to welcome Vanessa to the Times. She is the perfect journalist to be our leading voice on global fashion," said executive editor Jill Abramson, in a statement.
Friedman has been at the Financial Times since 2002 and is the first person to hold the role. Her successor has not been announced.
Friedman will be tasked with organising the publication's lucrative annual luxury conference, which is now in its 14th year. "Very honoured to follow Cathy Horyn and Suzy Menkes, two extraordinary fashion thinkers, at @nytimes," she tweeted today.
