Beauty Lab: Volumising hair mousse
Forget what you know about sticky foams that leave hair crispy and huge; hair mousse has moved on. The new generation of volumising mousses add natural life, lift and movement to hair, without any telltale signs of tampering. Which is why they're now found backstage at every big catwalk show and used by top stylists including Mark Hampton, who worked at Todd Lynn and Matthew Williamson.
"My tip is to use more than you think you should, apply to the roots and under layers, then brush through as you blow-dry with a soft bristle brush," says Hampton. We sorted the highs from the lows.
Balmain Volume Mousse Strong
This light foam is so easy to use, and gives great volume from root to tip, so you look like you have twice the amount of hair. The gutsy root lift seems to last a few days too.
L'Oréal Paris Studio Line Boost & Gloss Volume Mousse
Admittedly I'm a novice when it comes to the DIY blow-dry, but this mousse did very little to add volume to my naturally straight hair - even after I followed the instructions of drying it while tipped upside down. All that was left was a dizzy head and limp locks.
Bumble & Bumble Thickening Full Form Mousse
Applying foam to my hair felt a little Eighties but I was forced to quell my scepticism: five people commented that my hair looked great. Easy to apply, this provides lift at the roots and long-lasting shape.
TONI&GUY Prep Volume Plumping Mousse
This provided volume but left my hair feeling slightly hard and heavy, and looking like an X Factor contestant. Not one for those who favour the natural look.
John Frieda Luxurious Volume Building Mousse
Those with straight hair will be disappointed with this mousse. My hair certainly felt thicker at the ends, but this was due to the product residue clinging on. Even this cheap, I sadly wouldn't recommend this.
TRESemmé 24 Hour Body Amplifying Mousse
Even with a terrible blow-dry technique this provided ample, robust volume to my usually stubborn body of thick hair. Long lasting too, performing through steamy cooking and an afternoon siesta but left my hands and brush rather too sticky.
